Question: We are building an extension on the back of our house. A friend asked if we had marked out where all the underground services were before we started. I said no because we were working out the back, and the services come in from the front. Can you confirm this for me: do all the services come in from the front, or could they be coming in from the back as well?

Without visiting the property and doing a Dial Before You Dig request, it is hard to say.
But you are right, that most of the time, the services will come in from the front. However, several times we have seen services come in from the back, or even from the side of the house. Also, in addition to the power, phone, water and gas utilities, don’t forget sewer and stormwater – both of these are more likely to run out the back than the others.
For now I’d suggest you do a Dial Before You Dig request, and see if you can work out where everything is from the plans you get back. Then if you’re not sure where any of them are let us know and we can come out and confirm exactly where everything is for you.
